Online Professional Development Courses for Educators |

Courses
are six to eight weeks in duration. They are instructor-led by an experienced
or former K-12 classroom teacher. Students can expect to spend approximately
10 to 12 hours per week on the coursework. This includes the online portion
of the class plus some "offline" assignments. |

Course Description:
Participants will learn how
to use word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets,
and basic multimedia presentations as instructional and student
learning tools. Activities will focus on using computers to
enhance instruction and student learning. Participants will
be required to work outside of class to create a classroom
presentation and a variety of instructional and productivity
documents.
Note: Requires the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel,
and PowerPoint). Use of a Windows-based computer is recommended,
although Macintosh-based computer users are welcome.

Course
Description: Teachers will
review available instructional technologies and create at least
one technology-enhanced unit or lesson. Topics include reviewing
existing implementations of technology in education, understanding
the benefits of incorporating technology into education, evaluating
lesson plans that integrate technology, understanding classroom
management issues, and using the Internet and other resources
to create a student project.

Course Description: Participants
investigate the tools and fundamentals of Web page creation
and publishing. The course includes learning the basics of Web
page design and development and the use of web-editing programs,
including Netscape Composer. Skills in developing Web pages
that incorporate text, images, and hypertext links will be practiced
and reinforced. During the course, there will be emphasis on
using Web pages and the Internet in education. The culminating
activity will be to build a Web-based project or activity that
integrates the Web into the classroom.
Note: Requires the use of Netscape Composer (a component
of Netscape Communicator).

Participants will learn the basics of how to use a variety
of multimedia applications and tools to create a standards-based,
multimedia project for their classroom. By researching exemplary
multimedia lessons, activities, and resources available on
the Internet, as well as discussing pedagogical ideas, participants
will learn how to create meaningful and engaging multimedia
projects. The culmination of this course will be to create
a standards-based lesson, unit, or project that integrates
multimedia.

learning. Topics include effective Internet search techniques,
Internet access and safety issues, evaluating and citing Internet
resources, and using the Internet for teacher-led instruction,

will be required to complete supplementary research and an Internet-based
lesson plan.

Troubleshooting the Technology

Course Description:
This course offers educators
a practical look at proper approaches and techniques used
in troubleshooting classroom technology, including both
Macintosh and Windows-based computers. Basic and advanced
troubleshooting tips will be covered to assist the educator
to become a more independent and competent computer user.
From operating system configuration, hardware and software
basics, to the installation of memory chips, this class
will provide the educator with troubleshooting methodologies
and procedures, knowledge about Internet resources for troubleshooting,
and preventive maintenance and repair strategies. One of
the culminating exercises in the course is to create a report
of a troubleshooting experience that makes use of the skills
and resources learned in the class.
