This course is about research, standards, and practice for working with English Language Learners. The course is divided into eight main areas of study: Equity Principles, Conditions for Language Learning, Six Strategies for Accelerating Academic Language, Stages of Second Language Development, the Role of Assessment in EL Instruction, Analyzing Student Work, Specifically Designed Academic Instruction vs. English Language Development, and Differentiated Instruction for English Learners. Teachers will be asked to reflect on the content of each topic, connect the content to what they already know about each topic, practice using the new content, and begin to see how the lessons learned can be incorporated into their classrooms.
Note: Your final course project requires a classroom environment to complete. If you take this course during a time when class is not in session, please work with your instructor to complete the assignment when you can teach the lesson plan you've developed.
Application for credit is available after you enroll in a course session. You should apply for credits within 6 months of the completion of the course.
